Eye Examination

Maintaining good vision is ensured through regular, comprehensive eye examinations. Whether you need glasses or contacts, an examination by an ophthalmologist is a good idea.  Eye examination includes:
  • Measuring your eye pressure
  • A retinal exam to view the back of your eye
  • Examination of the front of your eye with a microscope

In addition to ensuring proper eyesight, regular eye examinations allow your eye doctor to detect and treat diseases at the earliest possible opportunity. Several eye diseases, such as glaucoma, show no symptoms in their early stages. A regular comprehensive eye examination can help detect diseases early, improving the likelihood for successful treatment.

Frequency
It is important to have regular eye exams. Here are some general guidelines recommended by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Age 40 and under Once every three years
Age 40 - 65    Once every two years
  Age 65 and over Annually
  Diabetics Annually

Some patients with certain ocular or systemic conditions may require more frequent examinations.

What happens during my visit?
Your eye doctor will ask you for information about your vision and health history, medications, symptoms of vision problems and other background information.

Using a number of tests and medical instruments, your eye doctor will conduct an external and internal exam of the various parts of your vision system including the eyelashes, eyelids, conjunctiva, iris, lens, cornea, pupils, extra-ocular muscles, blood vessels, optic nerve and the retina. The eye doctor will assess the health of your eyes and look for vision problems such as glaucoma, cataracts and corneal diseases. The doctor will also look for ocular changes associated with systemic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure and neurological disorders. This evaluation may also include a refraction, which determines whether you need prescription lenses or not.

Your eye doctor will make a final diagnosis and discuss a treatment plan designed specifically for you. The eye doctor will prescribe any necessary treatments such as corrective eyewear or medications.

CustomVue LASIK

The Edina Eye clinic offers the latest techniques in laser eye surgery featuring CustomVue LASIK. Our pricing includes all surgeon’s fees, facility fees, and a year’s worth of post operative care, including a complete eye exam at the end of one year.

Individualized Laser Vision Correction

Since the eximer laser’s approval by the FDA in 1995, millions of people have eliminated their dependence on glasses and contact lenses by correcting their nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism with laser vision correction, or LASIK. Now there is the VISX CustomVue individualized laser vision correction and it is setting a new standard for LASIK. Just like a fingerprint, each person’s vision is 100% unique to their eyes. VISX CustomVue can measure and address the unique properties of each person’s vision and provide them with the potential to experience better vision than is possible with glasses or contact lenses.

Great by Day and by Night

Laser vision correction patients in the past have occasionally complained about their night vision. These symptoms can, of course, also be experienced by people correcting their vision with glasses or contact lenses. However, in a clinical study conducted by the FDA, people were more satisfied with their night vision after their CustomVue LASIK as compared to their vision using glasses or contacts.

One year after the CustomVue procedure, patients in a clinical study reported these impressive results:
• 100% could pass a driving test
• 98% could see 20/20 or better
• 70% could see better than 20/20

Although no surgical outcome can be guaranteed, these clinical studies show the extraordinary effectiveness of this technology.

Laser Vision Procedures

Laser in-Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK, is the most popular form of laser vision correction. LASIK corrects vision by removing tissue from the inner cornea of the eye.

On the day of the procedure, the patient is given a medication to help them relax and anesthetic drops are placed into the eye. If the patient is a candidate for CustomVue LASIK, their unique correction information is entered into the VISX excimer laser and guides the laser throughout the procedure.

In less than a minute, the cool beam from the laser removes microscopic amounts of tissue, gently reshaping the cornea. During the procedure, an eye tracker follows the eye’s slightest movements and automatically repositions the laser to keep it focused where the doctor wants it.

The patient is asked to go home and rest for a short time after the procedure. Most patients notice a substantial improvement in their vision after this rest period and it continues to improve over the next several days. Routine follow-up visits complete the process.

Are you a candidate for laser vision correction?

In general, the ideal patient has healthy corneas and has not had a significant increase in their prescription in the last year. Pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions may not be good candidates. CustomVue has been approved to treat nearsightedness and astigmatism. Patients who are farsighted are often good candidates for conventional LASIK or other types of refractive surgery.

Realistic Expectations

It is important that you have realistic expectations when you decide to have laser vision correction. The goal of laser eye surgery is to reduce your dependence on corrective lenses. LASIK does not always create 20/20 vision and your doctor will provide you with any information you need to make and informed decision. Be sure to have all your questions answered before consenting to have any elective procedure.

The first step

Determining your refractive error and evaluating your entire eye health is the first step in the process of determining if you are a candidate for LASIK. At The Edina Eye Clinic, your doctor, who will also be your surgeon, will want to see the results of a recent complete eye exam. They will perform this exam themselves, or if you have had a recent exam at another clinic, they will do a complimentary consultation based on the records from that visit. Once it is determined that you are a candidate for LASIK, further diagnostic tests will be needed to collect the data necessary to complete the procedure.
A key feature of the CustomVue LASIK procedure is the use of WaveScan Wavefront technology. This technology was first developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space. Now your doctor can use this same technology to detect and measure the optical distortions unique to your eyes. This information is then transferred to the excimer laser used during your procedure, giving you the most precise and accurate vision correction available today.

Ideal wavefront exits the eye as a regular flat plane wave.

Light travels in a procession of flat sheets known as wave-fronts. Gentle wavefront lights enter the eye, pass through the entire optical system (cornea, lens and retina) and are then reflected back into the WaveScan sensors.

Deformed wavefront exits the eye as an irregular curved wave.

The WaveScan system compares the reflected wavefronts with the original unaltered wave-fronts. This produces a fingerprint of your vision, or WavePrint™ map. This information is then transferred totheVISXSTARS4THexdmer laser and is used as a guide to reshape the cornea during your laser vision treatment. Ideal wavefront exits the eye as a regular flat plane wave. Deformed wavefront exits the eye as an irregular curved wave.

WaveScan technology produces a detailed map of your eye-much like a fingerprint, no two are alike.

AcrySof® ReSTOR® Intraocular Lens Implant

For most cataract patients, life without reading glasses or bifocals is something they either experienced before presbyopia or they just dreamed about for most of their lives. But today, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is turning those dreams into reality with its revolutionary lens technology, which is designed to allow patients to see clearly at all distances without bifocals or reading glasses. The AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is now available and delivers a high level of glasses-free vision for cataract patients.

In the clinical study, 80% of patients receiving the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL reported that they never wear glasses for any activities. With the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL they can read a book, work on the computer, and drive a car - day or night - and play golf or tennis with an increased freedom from glasses.

In fact, patients were so pleased with their vision, nearly 94% of patients said they would have the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL implanted again, if given the choice.

Until recently, most patients had their vision improved with a monofocal IOL. Although the quality of their distant vision was excellent, most patients needed reading glasses to see near objects.  AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL provides a full range of vision, decreasing the dependency on reading glasses or bifocals.

The Safest And Most Successful Procedure Performed Today

Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, and usually requires just a few hours of your time from start to finish. Your eye will be treated with anesthetic prior to the procedure so you'll feel little, if any, discomfort, First, a tiny incision will be made in the eye allowing your surgeon to use a small instrument (about the size of a pen tip) to break up or wash away the cloudy cataract. Once the cataract is removed, the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL will be inserted through the same tiny incision and set into its permanent position.

What Is Presbyopia?

When your eyes were young, your natural lens was both transparent and flexible. Because of this, your vision was most likely stable until you reached your forties. Around that time, you may have noticed that you had to hold a menu or a book farther and farther away to read it. Many people end up wearing a pair of reading glasses or bifocals to compensate for this aging of the eye. This condition is called "presbyopia" and eventually affects everyone, including those who are nearsighted, farsighted, have cataracts, or had perfect vision most of their life.

The AcrySof Family of Lenses

Intraocular lenses were first introduced in 1949 and are available today in all kinds of shapes, sizes, and lens materials. AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOLs are made of the first foldable material developed exclusively for use in the eye. With more than 21 million lenses implanted, the AcrySof® lens is the most commonly used IOL in the world, since they became available in 1994. Its popularity is largely due to their ability to provide excellent visual results and a high level of patient satisfaction.

What To Expect After The Procedure

After the procedure, you'll rest for a short while before you go home. Your doctor will typically examine your eye within 24 hours. You'll need to use prescription eye drops to guard against infection and help your eye heal. For a few days, you may need to wear a protective shield, especially at night to prevent you from rubbing your eye. Everyone heals somewhat differently, but most patients see well enough to return to most of their routine activities the day after surgery. Once both eyes have been treated, you will fully appreciate the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL and realize that your cataract was one thing you could definitely live without.

Ask Your Doctor If The AcrySof® ReSTOR® Is Right For You

As with any surgical procedure there are inherent risks, and your results cannot be guaranteed. Your doctor will provide you with more detailed information about the potential risks and benefits to help decide whether cataract surgery and the AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL is right for you.
